Earthquake Awareness Training at AUZEF: A Scientific Perspective on the Istanbul Earthquake
As part of its in-service training activities for staff, Istanbul University’s Faculty of Open and Distance Education (AUZEF) recently held a program focused on earthquake awareness. The training, titled “A Perspective on the Istanbul Earthquake in the Light of the February 6 Earthquakes,” was delivered by expert Dr. Yıldırım Güngör, Assistant Professor.
The session explored the basic definition of earthquakes, the dynamics of tectonic movements around the world, and their specific impacts on Turkey, all through a scientific lens. Emphasis was placed on the importance of structural safety and disaster awareness, especially in light of the fact that Turkey lies within a major earthquake zone.
Participants were informed about the risks associated with a potential Istanbul earthquake and were provided with guidance on preventive measures that can be taken both individually and institutionally. The training also highlighted that awareness should be supported not only with knowledge, but also with conscious behavior and preparedness.
Closely followed by attendees, the training reaffirmed the critical importance of acknowledging the reality of earthquakes and taking proactive steps to mitigate risks.
AUZEF will continue to organize training programs that aim to equip its staff not only with professional skills, but also with a strong sense of social responsibility.
